SOME ‘ARCHİTECTURAL TERMS’ İN THE MEMOİRS OF BABUR

ABSTRACT

Gazi Zahîrü’d-dîn Muhammed Bâbur is the most important personage who wrote in the classical Chagatai period. His famous work Bâbur-nâme is well known Vekâyi. This Work, which has also been recorded with names such as Vekâyi'nâme-i Pâdışâhî and Bâburiyye, Vâkıât-ı Bâburî and Vâkıanâme and Tüzük-i Bâburî, is extremely important in that it sheds light on many historical events, contains information on many fields from geography to botany, zoology to architecture, and politics to literature. In this context and due to the city culture mentioned in the Memoirs and the information provided on architecture as a natural consequence of this culture, many terms, concepts and object names related to architecture have also been seen in the Work. For this purpose, this paper will focus on the architectural terms in the index of the Baburnama of Thackston, W. M., Zahiruddin Muhammed Babur Mirza and by determining the words transferred to Turkic languages from these terms used in many phases of daily life, will examine how these words were firstly used in Vekâyi and later in the works and dictionaries of the Cagatay, in what meanings they were used and their history and situation in contemporary Turkic languages. In addition, sample texts about these words in Vekâyi will be included and the related terms will be examined within the framework of this paper.
